Protect Science at the Tulsa Zoo

We, the undersigned citizens of Tulsa, object to the Tulsa Park and Recreation Boards recent decision to approve a creationist display at the Tulsa Zoo. We respect the right of all individuals, including those who interpret Genesis literally, to believe as their consciences dictate. However, no religion has the right to special treatment at a public institution.
We believe that the primary mission of the zoo is science education. Cultural and artistic material is permissible only when it does not detract from that goal and when it does not promote particular religious beliefs. In all cases, exhibit material should be developed by the curatorial staff of the zoo and not by private citizens.
We, therefore, call on the mayor and the Park and Recreation Board to,
a) reaffirm the zoos commitment to science education,
b) reverse the decision of June 7, 2005,
c) and direct the zoo staff to undertake a review of all exhibit material to ensure that it is consistent with the principles outlined above.
