As of Friday the 25th of March 2011, Dublin Bus have introduced a revised Nitelink service. Along with the cancellations of several Nitelink services, other services have had their timetables reduced and their routes changed. The 46N will now service Sandyford Village, meaning that towns such as Sandycove, Glasthule and Dalkey will no longer be serviced by a Nitelink. These are towns which are not accessible via taxi for anything less than €20, which many will be unable to afford.
Dublin Bus explained that they recently undertook a loading survey and came to the conclusion that some services were not being used as much as others. They went on to say that due to the wide availability of taxis, that numbers on the Nitelink services have reduced severely. Surely, it would make sense to reduce the service that tends to those closer to the City Centre in such a case rather than leaving those who live further afield stranded.
I propose that at the very least the 46N should be ran on an alternative basis in which we would see the buses changing destination every half an hour. One bus will serve Sandyford and the next would serve Dalkey as was the norm. Surely this is an achievable practice on behalf of Dublin Bus instead of completely withdrawing the service for those who lives in the aformentioned towns.
