Resurrect Latin

When someone says, Latin, most people think, The dead language? Never mind that Latin has affected and spawned more languages than probably any other in the history of humanity. Never mind that without Latin, English would be a language full of short, guttural words. Never mind that, although English is technically a Germanic language, we have words like conflagration as opposed to fire; we can say defenestrate instead of saying, to throw out a window. Never mind that all but forcing every student to take Spanish is shortsighted, but Latin has so many practical applications in the English language like vocabulary, grammar, and many important professions.

So this petition is to keep Latin classes from being dropped in East Chapel Hill High School, where Latin is not the most popular language to take, but it is there in full force. (Since it is usually easier to merely keep classes that are already there than to create classes, this particular petition is for East rather than another school.)

The undersigned are not just people who took Latin in high school or who went to East. This petition is by anyone and everyone who thinks Latin is important enough to keep around. Latin is not dead, but it does need protection. If we do not save the Latin language in our schools, we will lose a very valuable piece of ourselves.
