The formula is simple. Take B-List stars of the moment, athletes in the offseason that want to hob-knob with celebs, mix in 1-2 A-listers, a trendy musical guest, a game of softball or basketball with modified rules and TA-DAH... you have a hit show. Honestly, MTV is running so many reality shows they could fill enough teams to necessitate a 4-team tournament by themselves. Everyone gets publicity for their latest projects in a gigantic egomaniacal circle jerk and we get the joy of watching musicians trying to hit a softball and athletes with no charisma trying to be interesting.
For those that have never heard of Rock N Jock, I'd love to post a video or pictures from the Golden Era but it appears that all documentations of these events were wiped off the face of the planet, sans a few scraps here and there. Reviving Rock N Jock would also give Viacom the opportunity to sell DVD's of the old games and earn money off reels sitting in some archive next to episodes of Club MTV and Pauly Shore Spring Break sketches.
Of course, I have some reservations too as TV and movies have recently begun to slowly and efficiently rape, pillage and plunder my childhood with their remakes, reimaginings and recycling. So, there are a few aspects of the show that cannot be compromised:
1. It has to be a 1-day event. No ongoing tournament or 8 episode series.
2. Teams cannot be limited to only reality stars. A D-list celebrity is still a celebrity and will only add to the fun.
3. Bill Bellamy and Dan Cortese need to be prominently involved.
I'm so fervent about this idea that I went to the trouble of starting a petition. If enough of us sign this petition to bring Rock N Jock back, Viacom will have no choice to cave under the pressure of the vocal proletariat.
