This petition has been created due to the Southern District Health Board’s refusal to grant the Waiau Health Trust Ltd.’s request for an extension to their current contract and their decision to pull funding for the provision of the inpatient services of labour, birth and post natal care effectively resulting in the closure of Tuatapere Maternity.
In making the above decisions we believe the Southern District Health Board have failed to give our community due process by not allowing the Waiau Health Trust to explore options for more viable models of care; or to address the Southern District Health Board's concerns about viability and furthermore that they are setting a precedent for cost cutting of essential services women and families are entitled to nationwide.
These decisions do not support the Ministry of Health’s initiative of “Better, Sooner, more Convenient Health Care – Closer to Home” and further causes inequalities of access for people in rural communities which is a priority service delivery area under the New Zealand Health Strategy.
