Dear Mr. Ford
We the petitioners, petition you and the Office of the Attorney General to rid Toronto of Slum Lords once and for all. Toronto has been experiencing a serious housing crisis for years and it is time to stop and make things right!
We demand that in co-operation with the Tenants of Toronto and the Attorney Generals Office that you revise, increase and heighten the Standards for Multi Dwelling Ownership.
And that you and the Attorney General, charge Landlords an Annual Licensing Fee to operate based on new Higher Standards not renewable unless adhered to that protect tenants from living in bug and rodent infested dwellings and to secure that each and every dwelling/unit in the City of Toronto is in good repair with quality materials and to the highest Standard.
We petition you to incorporate qualified private inspectors rather than city inspectors to oversee a new and revised Standard for Multi Dwelling Buildings and that these inspectors have no affiliation whatsoever with; Contractors Licensed by the City of Toronto.
We Petition not only for good repair and maintenance of units, relief from insect and rodent infestation but also for air quality, water quality, fire safety including properly functional elevators especially those that have been retrofit clean and safe common areas with proper functioning security. We also demand that new Standards be clear and concise and protect all Tenants in the City of Toronto.
Toronto Tenants whether they are low income or the highest on the scale deserve quality housing and anything less for low income Tenants is, biased and discriminatory.
Landlords for far too long have been getting away with rent increases for buildings that are in moderate to severe disrepair.
If landlords wish to invest in old buildings they must be held accountable to maintain them to a high standard.
The average rent for low income housing in Toronto (1 bedroom) is $975.00 per month and up! There is a lot of money being collected with no regard or recourse for consumers/Tenants/Tax Payers!
Mr. Ford we petition you to act immediately and on behalf of the Tenants of the City of Toronto.
