Respected Sir,
You might be aware that Jadavpur University (JU) has been going through a phase of utter despair for last few weeks after Executive Council (EC) isolated five students out of 250+ students and suspended them alleging misconduct during their movement in 2003 based on report by one-man enquiry commission of Sri Amit Sen on Mar 15, 2005, one and half year after its constitution on Oct 01, 2003 and without allowing self-defense and proper evidence, making it a mockery of justice and democracy.
In September of 2003, the students of Engineering & Technology faculty in JU, had expressed their dissatisfaction in the prevailing examination system and wanted EC to modernize the same as per their wish-list. The fact that recently EC have agreed to implement some of their demands recently proves that their aspirations were understandable, rational and realistic.
Students of Jadavpur University once again rose to the call of time and stood beside their five friends and unanimously decided to go for a non-violent and peaceful concerted movement under leadership of FETSU (Faculty of Engineering & Technology Students' Union) demanding withdrawal of the suspension and resume academic normalcy in the campus. Seven students had decided to go for FAST-UNTO-DEATH from June 6, 2005 after the authority refused to withdraw the suspension.
JU authority led by Registrar and Vice-Chancellor disgraced this noble institute by bringing police forces in the campus amidst the darkness of midnight on Jun 10, 2005 to subdue the young and bright students who were already weak due to the hunger-strike. Several students were brutally lathicharged and one girl student was manhandled, reportedly even after they were hospitalized !
We, both JUites and non-JUites, condemn this police atrocity and want you to intervene to save a university of such rich heritage and academic excellence from further damage.
We, with deep faith in peace and democracy, would request you promptly take the following positive actions to reflect our aspirations in support to this petition organized by Sri Subhendu Bhadra, Vice President (Member Services), Jadavpur University Global Alumni Association (www.jugaa.org).
1. Unconditional and immediate withdrawal of undemocratic suspension of five young students.
2. Show-cause to Registrar, VC or anyone who called police forces in the campus to beat students and for their inability to reach the campus despite requests by police and students, showing extreme lack of professional responsibility
3. Form unbiased enquiry committee headed by a judge from the Kolkata high court.
4. Suspension of all the police persons who were involved in this barbaric brutality.
5. Eradicate all roots of violence in JU once enlighten by Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh.
