This petition is the vehicle for the sorry campaign launched in August 2011 to elicit a public formal apology from the Prime Minister of Australia to people with a disability and their families. The government is now acknowledging its role in fostering a culture of discrimination against people with a disability and the State's delivery of a disability service system that has been, at best, grossly inadequate for decades. We believe an apology will have countless benefits including government accountability and ownership of the disability service system and increasing the visibility of people with a disability and their families and the human rights they are deprived of. We believe the government should say sorry for condoning attitudes that people with a disability should be pitied and are second class citizens. We believe an apology will effect dignity and pride for people with disability and raise their status in society. We believe an apology will make other Australians realise that people with a disability should be honoured for their courage and determination not forgotten and ignored. The sorry campaign letter below is currently being circulated across social media networks. Please sign the petition if you think Australians with a disability and their families deserve this apology. Please help promote the sorry campaign, including this petition, if you care about the welfare of Australians with a disability and their families. http://a4.org.au/a4/sites/default/files/Campaign%20for%20a%20Public%20Apology%202.0.pdf http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/DDA.PublicForum/
