Honarable Minister,
School Education, Youth Welfare.
With a deep regret and on behalf of all children , I would like to inform you that although there is no provision of any corporal punishments to children in Indian schools education act, rather there is a ban on any form of Corporal Punishment in Govt.as well as private schools, this is being practiced in almost every school ( leaving a very few exceptions ) and the poor children are still suffering from the hands of teachers / principals. We can read in various news papers a no.of such incidents happened recently and there are many incidences which goes unreported. You know that it is one of the Aim of the govt.to ensure that every child must go to school and to achieve this, many schemes are being declared but these will be never succeeded until the punishments are stopped in schools. India had also ratified the conventions on child rights a decade ago in which it is promised that no child will be subjected to the inhuman treatment, torture and physical punishments in any institution. Apart from physical, there are many other forms of punishments which are used quite regularly by teachers and these seriously affect the psychology of children. Children still fear to go to school because they scare of beatings and punishments from the teachers which is not at all a good sign. Sources from Childline informed that they receive thousands of complaints daily of beatings in schools and homes from children and related people . Parents can not open up as they fear that their child will be sacked from the school or will be more harassed . Violence spreads violence and children learn to beat someone who is weaker when they are in anger. This is very harmful to the whole society and if we want to see the better next generation, we must ensure that our children gets education in free and fearless atmosphere. This violence MUST be stopped. My few suggestions are as below -
1. To form a committee exclusively to ensure the implementation of ban on CP effectively with the help from NGO's which should ensure that children are not ill treated at schools.
2. To organize teachers training courses for awareness about child rights and anger management techniques / classroom control methods without using punishments and to train them about using positive discipline methods.
3. To put notices in all schools informing that no physical punishments are allowed as per law and suffered children should know where to register their complaint in case of being beaten up.
4. To spread public awareness through different medias like televisions, newspapers that beating children is not allowed
