An Open Letter to Mr. Bush
Dear Mr. Bush,
I am an Afghan and being an Afghan is not at all enjoyable in today's world. I can remember a long list of things I have been called: terrorist, Bin Ladan, animal, Taleban and the more 'modest' ones aren't even worth mentioning. To be frank by now I am almost used to the titles some nobles of the public of this global village have showered upon me. Few things in life are worse and more difficult to do than having to hide your true identity especially not because one is a culprit but because one has become ashamed of what he is despite having done nothing bad, no murders, no violence, nothing evil.
I am only a teenager and I have already had to go through so much of this world. As far back as I remember things never been like or even close to the way they should have been.
Mr. President!
-- YOU ARE AWARE that my people suffered under the mujahideen who had your support and backing. Millions of my country-mates were killed. We lost the already shattered freedom we had. Our women were persecuted and our men were harassed and killed. The worst forms of attrocities were committed and we witnessed the worst violation of human rights and International humanitarian laws.
--- YOU KNOW that people whom we did not know, who didn't speak our language, who didn't belong to our country began to rule my country and dictate my people. We became foreigners while living at our own homes. They looted me and my people and your former 'battlefield' was never to recover...
-- And then Mr. President, you know that SOMEHOW (!) from SOMEWHERE (!) came the Taliban - the scavengers. Our sufferings continued and the situation worsened. The scale of persecutions, massacres, harassments expanded. Millions more were killed, millions more took refuge. The little forgotten history was being repeated.
-- YOUR ARE AWARE that Afghan Women became second class citizens and children the worst of the victims. We witnessed destruction, devastation, inhumanity, public lashing, public executions, summary executions, torture ... and yet more persecution. Barbarianism was no stranger to the then life in Afghanistan.
-- YOU DON'T KNOW that not many things in the world are worse than seeing your dreams shatter, your home burning.
-- YOU DON'T KNOW that nothing in the world is worse than being the least safe at your own home. Ask us, we have experienced it - not once, not twice but literally everyday of our life that we remember.
-- YOU DON'T KNOW how life is while living in a country where superpowers settler their odds and fight their battles, from where the 'REMANENTS' of these battles terrorize the world.
Of course Mr. President, you were never really bothered until these scavengers knocked on your doorsteps and struck at your home in September 2001.
-- Then came YOUR War Against Terror and the 'liberation(!?)' of Afghanistan and we were freed (!?). Some of the Taliban left, many shaved off their beard and joined the party, many changed sides and joined the party, many had always been in of the party. And Mr. President! YOU KNOW that you and the criminal Mujahideen hosted this party. For us there was still despair but, still we saw a gloomy light of hope, a hope that things would change, a hope for the never realistic future, a hope for life - life as free human beings.
But Alas...!
That was not to be.
-- YOU KNOW that our killers and persecutors became our rulers, band of bandits formed our government and Mr. President! You supported them. Our hopes faded, our bad days continued. Perhaps, our lives were never meant to be sweet and prosper. Corruption, illiteracy, fundamentalism, extremism and other such heinous calamities prevailed. Drought, hunger and poverty added salt to the cuts and our injuries were never to heal...
-- YOU KNOW that today, things are as they have always been. Appearances have changed, beards have shortened, artillery is gone but the deeds haven't, mentalities haven't. And to make things worse there are millions who don't have food to eat, clothes to wear and a place to call Home Sweet Home. Fundamentalism is being preached and extremism is being harbored. Hatred is being fueled and our freedom is being snatched. We have experienced no Democracy, no freedom, none at all. We have had no good days and have stopped dreaming for good days. We have no schools, no teachers, no infrastructure, no technology. We know that our rulers have become immensely rich, the criminals have become extremely powerful and my people have become extremely poor.
-- YOU ARE AWARE that The Talibs have now settled among these rulers - they are in the parliament, in the legislative council, in the Ministry of Justice, everywhere in the government and in authority... One band of bandits (the extremist Taleban) have merged as an integral part of another band of bandits (the Mujahideen). The situation today is the worst since your democracy came to Afghanistan.
Mr. President! Your warm relation with our criminal, extremist, corrupt - rich rulers continues.

-- The recent move for the purpose of reinstating of the extremist and barbaric department for Amr-Bil-Maroof-Wa-Nahi-An-AlMunkir (The Implementation of the Vice and Virtue) came as no surprise but as another addition to the miseries of our lives, our shattered living. We were never surprised at the backing of this inhumane law provided by your representatives and ambassadors in Kabul while calling critics as 'Mad Pessimists!
Mr. President!
-- YOU KNOW that this law is religious in nature and has one and only definition. It is the same treatment whether done by the Taliban or by the Karzai administration. Please, Please take some time to revise your information on Amr-Bil-Maroof-Wa-Nahi-An-AlMunkir.
-- YOU ARE AWARE that the spokesman for Ministry of Justice of Afghanistan has in a news conference confessed that the proposed ministry would be NO DIFFERENT from that of the Taliban in principle.
Mr. President!
*- While you and your people enjoy Freedom in your country, I hope that someday for some SECONDS you would bother to think of our share of Freedom as human beings and liberty in our own country (home?).
*- I hope that some day while taking lunch in White House, you would bother to imagine the faces the ill nourished children of Afghanistan.
*- I hope that some day while in the company of your own family, you would for some seconds bother to think of the millions upon millions of Afghans who have no family.
*- I hope that some day while sitting in the balcony of your home and reading The Washington Post, you would bother to think of the millions of us who have no homes at all.
*- I hope ...
It seems that like All our previous hopes, these ones are as well never to be fulfilled.
Mr. President! If you ever by chance read this, I thank you for your time. Thank you for your liberation(!), democracy(!) and freedom(!). Thank You Mr. Bush.
