SUMMARY: On this Tuesday, 13 April 2004, we hereby call for and support the creation of a new Nobel Prize, in the honorable memory of Sir Alfred Nobel, to be awarded annually to person(s) contributing exceptionally and outstandingly to the SURVIVAL OF LIFE on Earth.

This award is needed because at this point in human history on our fragile planet, unbiased scientific evidence shows overwhelmingly that the fabric of life itself, including human life, is in dire danger, and that we humans can no longer take for granted the survival of our own species, or that of our deeply inter-dependent animal, plant, and micro-organism brothers and sisters in the family of nature.

Extremely conservative scientific estimates hold that due to selfish and careless human activity, especially in the past two centuries, the present extinction rate of the species or sub-species of living organisms on our imperiled planet is a horrifying ONE PER HOUR. At this rate, total human extinction can happen within a few centuries.

Such estimates are based, in part, on the reporting of the science journal Nature in January 2004. The scientific bases of such assessments are unquestionable and overwhelming.

It is time to wake up---NOW----PLEASE!

The monetary value of this proposed "Survival of Life Nobel Prize" would be commensurate with the other Nobel Prizes already being awarded by the Nobel Foundation and related organizations.

However, because like the Nobel Prize in Economics this prize would be funded independently, it will not impose a financial burden on the organizations responsible for the awarding of the present Nobel Prizes or on the estate of Sir Alfred Nobel.

Also, because Survival of Life is not limited or directly tied to any specific scientific or artistic discipline or philosophy, the addition of this prize would not violate the wishes expressed in the Nobels will, which emphasizes "conferring the greatest benefit on mankind."

We humbly believe that protecting humans from extinction is indeed the very essence of "conferring the greatest benefit on mankind."

Please join us in advocating and supporting this extremely timely new Nobel Prize.
Thank you.
