More than 100 people have written letters of support to the owners of Willos cafe after a new canopy and hardstanding area was added to the front of the Piermont Place eaterie.
However, owner Peter Wilson subsequently discovered the improvements to the sandwich bar needed planning permission.
Now he has been ordered by Teignbridge Councils planning department to remove both the awning and the hardstanding area within two months.
Planning officers say the work is conspicuous in a prominent location and has an
unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the Dawlish conservation area.
Although the opposite effect has been found, with strong customer feedback infavor of keeping the new canopy.
"Compared to the amusement arcade eyesore and the other temporary canopies, the new canopy and seating area is a refreshing sight offering shelter from the wind and, when we see it, the sun"
