That the maximum sentence under the charge be imposed on Mr. Alexis Lemmy Mokgoro, or at least an imprisonment term of no less than ten (10) years

PETITION: That the maximum sentence under the charge be imposed on Mr. Alexis Lemmy Mokgoro, or at least an imprisonment term of no less than ten (10) years.

BACKGROUND
Bridgitte Boitumelo Mashope (Bibi) is my daughter, my sister, my friend. She is a woman, a human being just like you and me. On the 29th October 2004 Alexis Lemmy Mokgoro locked her in their bedroom and beat her into a coma. He called BiBi to their bedroom at about 06:30 on the morning of Friday, 29th October 2004, and immediately locked the door and attempted to kill her. This act was premeditated. This attempt at murder was not impulsive or committed in the heat of a protracted argument.

By his own admission, Mr.Mokgoro said that he wanted to punish BiBi Even as the child-minder and his own nephew tried to open the bedroom door to save BiBi from this vicious assault, he refused to open the door for some time. It was only when he realized that BiBi had fallen comatose that he got scared and opened the door.

In contrast to the severity of her injuries, however, the Randburg Magistrates court only found him guilty of aggravated assault. He violated her in a very cruel and degrading manner. In her current, permanent vegetative state caused directly by his actions, BiBi does not enjoy life. At the time of this vicious assault BiBi was 32 years old and in the prime of her career. Mr. Mokgoro has shown no sense of remorse for this crime and has only displayed utter arrogance during the protracted court hearings over the past five years. We therefore request that the maximum sentence for this crime be imposed upon him.

We the undersigned petition Magistrate George Andrews of the Randburg Magistrates Court to impose the maximum sentence in the case of the State vs Mr. Alexis Lemmy Mokgoro. Mr Mokgoro has been free to roam the streets, enjoying his life, whilst our sister has been confined to a bed, in a permanent vegetative state and fed through a hole in her stomach for the past five (5) years. We as Bibis family and friends are wondering when and if justice will be served in this country.
