I have been in Real Estate for 21 years and have valued the MLS Million Dollar Club Award as something to strive for, it is the representation of professionalism and hard work in our industry.
Our current board of directors does not feel this way, in fact, they have made the decision to eliminate this program without the sanctions of its membership.
If you do not agree with this decision it is time to make your voice heard loud and clear.
In our Board Member, Sano Stantes, most recent Blog I quote:
The award gained popularity in the industry, increasing the prestige of the award which was awarded to those elite few who produced the volume to achieve it. The criteria has evolved, but ultimately the award promotes members to produce a volume of business and does little to enhance the qualitative goals of the real estate industry
This statement is offensive to me and many Realtors who produce in high volume.
I disagree with this premise as there are many Realtors producing in low volume that do nothing to enhance the industry and their community.
And so, last week the CREB board made an insightful decision to progress past an outdated tradition and move members towards furthering the goals of our profession in fostering the quality of service rather than quantity of sales. The news was received with mixed skepticism, akin to the day we published the last catalogue of listed properties in favor of a computerised database, but the CREB board has received kudos from other boards across the country (many who have already dismantled their award) for having the courage to progress towards greater professionalism in the industry
It is arrogant for the board to presume that this is the direction that its members wish to take. To liken this decision to that of removing catalogues, is like comparing phasing out a type writer and eliminating the Pulitzer Prize they have no relevance except for the fact that they believe the MLS Million Dollar Club is outdated.

There is a bigger picture to this decision, and it relates to the manor of how this decision was made, and the direction this Board of Directors wants to take the Calgary Real Estate Board.
This board is a co-operative, to remove this program without the sanction of the membership is wrong.
If Sano Stantes recent blog is representative of the attitude the CREB board of directors has, then I for one am going to stand up and be heard.
I have my own opinions and thoughts about the elimination of the MLS Million Dollar Club award of merit and am sure all you will too.
Yes, the program may very well need to be modified.
