This letter is from alumni of the three constituent colleges of Anna University. We are currently a mixed group of professionals and students. The common thread that connects us is the strong desire to contribute back to our alma mater in whatever little ways possible and have created a need-based scholarship endowment in our respective departments. As we grow in our lives, it is our wish to strengthen this umbilical connection through many more resourceful alumni contributions. We have already begun slow but sure steps in the direction of its realization.
With this brief introduction, we will now delve into the primary purpose of this letter. We read in Newspapers that there will be no TNPCEE from the next academic year. The reason being that this will achieve less burden and trauma. While we welcome initiatives which achieve that goal, we sincerely believe that the move to abolish TNPCEE will not lessen the burden and trauma. An analysis of State Board Examination marks reveals this. Many students score the same marks and using Date of Birth as one of the criteria to break the tie punishes the student for no fault of his. A student born a day later than the person who got the same mark and is no other way different from him gets punished. If the date of birth matches then lot is used to break the tie. We believe that any criteria other than marks is arbitrary and this is more traumatic than writing TNPCEE. Using only State Board Examination only increases the probability and TNPCEE lessens it to a great extent and is almost zero. An analysis of marks of previous years will reveal this. Besides, State Board Examinations are not kept with keeping Engineering education in mind and hence cannot be fine-tuned to suit the needs of Engineering. Since reviving TNPCEE for all the Engineering colleges is impossible we believe that conducting an Entrance Examination for the three constituent colleges of Anna University is very well within its ambit and is desirable. The Deemed Universities of Tamil Nadu already do it.
As students of AU we feel that an Entrance Examination is necessary for AU.
In the above paragraphs we just expressed our opinion frankly and if there is misinterpretation please let us know. We would like to hear your opinion. Our email address is [email protected] (Being a student of that batch of CEG, AU this address is given).
