To,

Smt. Pratibhaji Devisingh Patil,

The President of Bharat ,

Respected Madam,

Since our country has an origin from one of the most ancient civilizations in the world,we are bound to have our own cultural identity! The name of a country is a very first representation of her identity in the outer world!

The constitution of Bharat,in it's very first article ,part 1,clause1,has stated as follows,
"1. Name and territory of the Union-
(1)India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States."(http://indiacode.nic.in/coiweb/fullact1.asp?tfnm=00\%201).

The fact is that, though "India" &" Bharat",both are the names that are accepted by the constitution, the only name that is used officially for our country at many places at national levels(including the constitution itself) & at all places at the international levels is "India" & not "Bharat".

Now,the question is that,is the word "India" our own name? The answer is "NO" !That is the name given to us some 400 yrs ago by the people who have come from the outside world to rule us ! Why should a country like ours with a cultural background of thousands of years need "somebody" from outside to "give" her a name ?

The name Bharat is a well accepted in our country ,in various governmental & social fields, which is evident from the following examples:-

1.Our national anthem :-

Jan gan man adhinayak jay he
Bharat bhagya widhata( & not India's bhagya widhata)

2.Our national pledge :- The very first line is...

"Bharat mera desh hai.

3.The word Bharatiy dand sanvidhan is used for Indian penal code.

4.The highest civil honour, which is given in our country is "Bharatratna". & not 'Indiaratna"

5.In daily "Hindi Samachar " on Doordarshan national network always uses Bharat for the word India. e.g.

a cricket match between" India & England" as "Bharat aur England ke bich"

6 we say,"Bharat mata ki jay " & never "India mata ki jay"!

& so on..

Even , small countries like SriLanka & Myanmar have shown an awareness to change their names, then why should a vast country like Bharat remain in a deep slumber for such a long period?Even the major cities like Mumbai,Kolkatta & Chennai have already taken an initiative in this direction & now ,this is a need of time to take this process further on an national level !

Our freedom fighters have done a great job by giving our nation it's own identity as an independent & sovereign nation & now, this is our duty to show a courage to throw away the name that represents a bad patch of slavery in the history of our country & to execute our right to call us at the international level as Bharatiyas ,which is our true cultural identity!

Respected President, we put this petition before you as a peaceful & nonviolent way to represent our humble & sincere wish to take all actions to make necessary amendments via the legal parliamentary procedures so as to promote the use of "Bharat" as the ONLY official name of our country at the national (including the use in the language of the constitution )& international levels!

JAI BHARAT!!!
