Mobilize a mass labor/community rally against budget cuts in Olympia on Presidents' Day, February 21, 2011
On December 11, the governor and state legislature slashed funding for education, healthcare, and services in record speed. Additionally, the governor seeks more cuts while at the same time attacking state workers wages and pensions. It is outrageous to balance the budget on the backs of workers, the poor, and the jobless while big business makes record profits. It is time to make giant corporations pay for the crisis they created and to stop squandering billions of taxpayer dollars on corporate welfare and endless wars. The Washington State legislature needs to hear this message from everyone.
Labor organizations need to act now, working in unison and with the community, to launch a major fightback in order to defend their members and vital state services.
We, the undersigned, urge labor unions in Washington to organize a united, coordinated and militant Presidents Day action to demand that the legislature:
1. Tax the profits of huge companies and end the billions of dollars of corporate tax giveaways;
2. Petition Congress to end the wars and return billions of our tax dollars to the state; and
3. Use this money to restore funding for healthcare, education, social services, job programs and other crucial government services.
