If you love animals, hate abusers, are sick and tired of judges not enforcing the maximum sentences and want changes to New Zealand’s animal welfare legislation then this petition is for you.
‘Voice for the Animals’ is a petition to show the judges that as a country we will no longer tolerate their inept sentencing of serious animal abusers and we want better structures in place to punish animal abuse offenders and prevent animals from being harmed.
In 2010 the maximum sentence for ‘wilful ill-treatment’ of animals was increased from three to five years.
The most a judge has ever sentenced someone for ‘wilful ill-treatment’ of an animal is 18 months jail.
Judges are refusing to do their job properly and enforce the strongest sentence that is available to them.
This must stop and we need your help!!
This petition will be presented to the Judicial Commissioner so he/she can pass it onto to the judges and they can see how annoyed society is about their lenient sentencing when it comes to animal abuse.
It will also be sent to Parliament for changes to animal welfare legislation.
Changes to legislation that ‘Voice for Animals’ wants are:
*A public registry for anyone convicted of animal abuse.
It would give the SPCA and animal control officer’s knowledge of offenders in their area and allow them to keep a check on those individuals.
A public registry would also allow anyone selling an animal the chance to check whether that person has any convictions for animal abuse.
*High risk offenders to be given lifetime bans
This will stop offenders who are given a life time ban on owning an animal from reapplying after 2 years.
*Fines for lower end offenders.
Fines would be given to people whom repeatedly fail to provide the basic needs for their animals.
*Psychological evaluations and compulsive rehabilitation
Anyone convicted of ‘wilful ill-treatment’ is placed under a compulsive order to participate in psychological evaluations and compulsive rehabilitation while in prisons.
Studies conducted in the past that have categorically shown that an animal abuser will highly likely abuse more animals, abuse women and children and are more likely to engage in a broad range of violent behaviours.
Please sign this petition to ensure that positive steps are taken and the best structures are put in place to protect New Zealand’s animals, and animal abusers are held accountable to the full extent of the law for their horrid crimes.
YOU ARE THE VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS!!
