Dear SacX,
This email is written to you about a problem at XBF. The problem is its leadership, and to be blunt and to the point, it is lacking at the most extreme peak: Jamslam.
Dont get me wrong, the man is a genius when it comes to technical aspects of being an administrator, such as site building, programming, etc, but when it comes to leadership, taking criticism, and taking other peoples opinions, he stumbles and falls.
When I was first made a moderator, I was cautious about becoming one, but Jamslam won me over by promising me that my opinion in the mod forum would be counted and factored into decisions made by the upper echelon of the moderating crew. This has been far from the case. During my time as a moderator, and apparently throughout the entirety of Jamslams reign, democracy has rarely been considered. I have never seen a vote been taken on anything. Even when the overwhelming majority [almost all, in fact] of moderators and co-admins support something that has been passed on in the moderator forum, Jamslam has been known to make a judgment on a forum issue based on his own preferences, and his own sight of the forum, not what the majority of the moderators think would be better for the forum. No argument against it, just a simple this is not what I think the forum is or should be and the thread is closed. I have personally asked for votes to be taken on certain subjects, both positive and negative to my agenda, only to see the above statement repeated again, and another idea to spice up the forum and remove it from the stagnancy it now possesses is shot down. Thus, the lack of democracy becomes a match lit in the kerosene-soaked haystack that is XBF right now.
Possibly adding to his lack of leadership and decision-making skills is the fact that he rarely posts, nor apparently even reads most of XBFs topics. He himself has said that it is not his job to do any moderating at XBF, and has given himself a lack of knowledge to what the forum and its members needs, deserves, and should have, all the while holding on stubbornly to old mantras and keeping XBF second to his own forum and site. From the way he acts, it seems as if he resents having to deal with XBF and the moderating team.
A big issue that has been an almost constant topic in the mod forum is the status of a member under the name of Sgt. Cool Dogg. When he first joined, he spammed up the forum, and harassed other [female] members of the forum. Under normal circumstances, he would be banned permanently, dont you agree? Well, ok, yes, he would be given a second chance, which he was.
He did it again.
And he is still here, still his same old self [even though a bit better], but the fact is, he broke one of the cardinal rules of the forum, and of plain society, yet he still fouls up the forum, and Jamslam refuses to ban him.
In another much more recent example, it was requested that the Lounge be split into two separate forums: A serious Lounge, where spamming would not be tolerated, and it would be moderated to the degree of the other areas of the forum, and a looser, less moderated forum, where posts would not count towards your post counts. Just about the entire moderating community was behind it [and many members would be too], but we do not have that split occurring now, because of Jamslam and his stubbornness. Now, the moderators of the Lounge have to deal with the same enigma as before: What constitutes spam and flaming, and what doesnt? Throughout the history of the board, Jamslam has yet to make a clear distinction of what is against the rules, and what is not. He has even let nudity be on the boards before, citing that it wasnt pornography, but it was nudity, nonetheless, which has always been against the rules.
I think I can speak for almost the entirety of the moderation staff when I say that we feel that the forum as it is now with Jamslams current state of mind has been suffering due to lack of leadership, no consistency in upholding rules has been given to use by Jamslam, so constant criticism is feared, and many times we feel that we have no direction both as a moderating staff and forum.
All that we askno.beg for is a change. Whether this change is the demodding of Jamslam, an increased amount of activity at XBF for you, or telling Jamslam to shape up, something needs to be done to help develop this forum into something better. If the forum continues to stay how it is, there is no future for it.
Sincerely,
metallicafan and the XBF.NET moderating team.
