The news media is supposed to offer an unbiased and accurate reporting of the news. In times of Federal Elections their job becomes even more important as most voters get their information on party platforms from the news.
The Canadian Broadcast Consortium has taken it upon itself to exclude the Green Party from the televised debates, for the second time after the election in 2004. This in spite of the fact that as a party with 4\% of the vote last election the Green Party is receiving taxpayer money at a rate of $1.75 per vote for a total of over $1 million, is running candidates in all ridings once again and clearly cannot be thought of as a fringe party any longer.
Canadians are paying for a party that they are not even permitted to hear from.
With support of six per cent of the population according to polls after the start of the election campaign, Harris and his party have earned a spot.
It is also true that since 1993, the NDP, Bloc Québécois, the Progressive Conservatives and the Reform Party have all been invited to participate in the debate without holding official party status.
The Bloc Québécois do not have members running in most of the ridings in Canada, in fact at the time of this writing there are no Bloc Québécois running in any riding outside of Quebec! Yet they are invited to the debates, but the Green Party with members running in every riding are not.
Even just a few days after the start of the election, editorials have appeared including in the Edmonton Journal on how the Green Party deserves a spot on the debates. During the election of 2004 the position of the editorial board at the Globe & Mail was also that Harris deserves to participate in the debates, and with the increased support this time around there is no reason to believe that their position on the matter will be any different.
Sign this petition and tell the news media to stick to reporting all the news, not just the news that suits their political motives! We want fair and accurate election reporting and this includes inviting the Green Party to the debates!
