Currently:
Only 12\% of Nova Scotians report to living an active lifestyle (Canadian Census Data);
Inactivity leads to increased burden and increased costs for the health care system;
Communities with infrastructure for active transportation have lower obesity rates;
Canada has committed to reducing green house gases in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol and shifting transportation modes is an important part of this commitment;
Several Nova Scotian municipalities have struck Active Transportation (AT) committees; and others have developed or are in the process of developing bikeways plans;
Transport Canada is planning on allocating a percentage of infrastructure funds to active transportation;
Long term cost savings in road infrastructure would be realized if other modes of transportation were more heavily used.
Therefore we, the undersigned, request that the provincial government of Nova Scotia allocate 10\% of all gas tax revenues to active and sustainable transportation infrastructure. We would like to see this policy in place by the Fall of 2006.
