The Anti-Bullying Ally Action Campaign for AB 9 would like for you to please support a pending bill (AB 9) known as Seth's Law. AB 9 would ensure that all students are protected against bullying and harassment based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, and religion by providing schools with clear guidelines to prevent and address bullying.
Due to recent tragic deaths that have resulted from bullying and harassment in schools, such as Seth Walsh, a 13-year-old who committed suicide after being bullied in school for being gay, it is clear that California schools need policies that prohibit harassment and violence. AB 9 would do this by providing California schools tools to prevent and address this problem in order to create a safe learning environment for all students. For instance, AB 9 would require schools to have clear complaint procedures of all reports of harassment and bullying. In addition, AB 9 would require schools to bolster professional development curricula for teachers, counselors, and administrators with instruction on identifying and halting harassment and discrimination as well as creating a culture of inclusion and respect for difference. Lastly, AB 9 would require schools to communicate the harmful impact of bullying and harassment on both individual victims and the entire school community to students, staff and parents.
This bill is an important step toward preventing and addressing issues of bullying and harassment as well as improving school climate and safety. For all these reasons, we strongly offer support for AB 9.
