AF promotes ignorance

As citizens against racism in any form, we are shocked and disgusted at
Abercrombie & Fitch's recent line of graphic T-shirts adorned with Asian
caricatures. The prints on the Tees are degrading misrepresentations of
Asian Americans that rely on racist stereotypes for their source of
"humor." We, as most Americans, strongly believe that demeaning and
stereotyping a race and culture, along with their struggle in the United
States, for the sake of selling a product is not only ignorant of history,
but highly offensive.

AF sells Racism

Slogans such as, "Two Wongs can make it White" or "Get your Buddha on the
Floor," partnered with stereotypical portrayals of Asian laundrymen
wearing rice patty straw hats and Asian woman in a passive manner, have no
place in a modern organization looking for the business of Asian Americans
or well minded Americans. Using pictures of Buddha for comic relief make
us wonder what type of respect exists within Abercrombie & Fitch for
Buddhists. Littered throughout the line of the six Tees are images of
smiling slanted eyed subservient restaurant workers with references to
common offensive Asian stereotypes such as, "You love long time" and "Eat
in or Wok Out."

Our message

Considering the blatant lack of humor and tact we must then question the
sensitivity and intelligence of every employee at every level responsible
for designing and marketing the tee shirts.

Abercrombie & Fitch has recalled the T-shirts and apologized. But they
said that it was meant to be funny.

It is not funny, never was, and we can't imagine how it could ever be
confused to be so. Racial stereotypes are not funny, ethnic targeting is
not funny, disrespecting a religion is not funny. Would Abercrombie &
Fitch also release a line of Tees depicting African Americans or other
ethnic groups in the same derogatory light? We hope not.

We are forming this petition to let Abercrombie & Fitch and all other
companies know how much business you can lose through racial
insensitivity, not only from Asian American consumers but from all
Americans with a social conscience. We hope that things like this will
not happen again. Racism is not chic.
