We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the treatment and education our children are receiving in the public school system.
On February 14, 2006, teacher Paul Dawson was suspended for ten days after telling a Black high school student to, sit down, nigger.
On March 13, 2006, Autumn Ashante, 7-year-old home-schooled girl, was unofficially banned from district schools after reciting a black pride poem.
On November 2nd, 2005 a 13 year-old special education student was locked in the equipment cage of PS 18s gymnasium. When found, the gym teacher, Ms. Puglisi said, Is it feeding time at the zoo? The wild animal had to be tamed. Ms. Kweliona, the teacher who found him was suspended for protesting against the racist treatment.
March 16, 2005, white Assistant Principal Nancy Miller was investigated for forcing fourth-grade Haitian students at PS 34 in Queens to eat on the floor after allegedly saying, In Haiti, they treat you like animals, and I will treat you the same way here.
April 2, 2004, Julio Pizzaro, an aide at PS 186 in the Bronx had charges pressed against him for strip searching four fourth-grade boys in search of a missing ring.
In 2006, in order to graduate, high school students were required to answer a question on the New York City Regents Examination that asked them to name ways in which British colonialism benefited Africa.
The fact that only 45.4\% of Black and Latino Children graduate from High School compared to 81\% of White children is directly correlated to the abuse, dehumanization, mis-education, and resulting lowered self-esteem our children are consistently forced to face as students in the public school system.
OUR CHILDREN ARE UNDER ATTACK!
An attack on our children is an attack on our community!
We demand funding for independent educational institutions designed to benefit the community!
We demand the implementation of the African History Curriculum that was mandated by the Department of Education in 1997!
We demand the creation and implementation of mandatory African History staff development and Race & Racism staff development!
We demand the creation, implementation, and advertisement of supportive networks for students, parents, educators and administrators who have been victims of injustices in the public education system!
We demand that Aja Kweliona be reinstated to the classroom without penalty!
We demand that all educators and administrators be held accountable for their actions!
