Cancel Lake Oswego High School First Semester Finals

As the Oregons unpredictable winter weather rears its ugly head during the last few weeks of the semester, students have only one thing on their minds: finals. Although some classes have been questioned by Mr. Plato as to what should happen if one or more finals fall on a snow day, many other students are clueless as to what the outcome will be. Some say push the finals forward, cutting into our precious time allotted for second semester; but there is a better solution. A respected school in our area has taken the measure already, and as concerned students we feel it is the best course of action. As you may or may not know, Jesuit High School has canceled all first semester finals. The grades that the students have now will be their final grades for the semester. The reasoning speaks for itself, as shown in this quote from the Jesuit news release:
Postponing final exams until next week would create too much distance between the
students review and the assessment, cut days from Semester 2 classes, and force
teachers to grade exams and prepare for classes in a highly-pressurized environment.
In this less-than-ideal situation, we believe that the most just decision is to allow the
students cumulative 18 weeks grades to stand as the best reflection of their effort and
understanding in each class.
We believe the steps taken by the Jesuit Administration are both appropriate and appreciated. The responsibility of the Administration shows that they obviously respect and care about the students' success.
Thank you.
