Change Canadian Anthem to "YMCA" for duration of 2014 Winter Olympics

Canadians do not stand for the unjustified infringement to basic human liberty.[1]  We, the undersigned, do not support Russia's recently enacted laws which declare individual choice and freedom a matter of "propaganda".

We sympathise with those who have called for a relocation of the 2014 Winter Olympics to Vancouver and other locations, but as many facilities have been repurposed and with only six months remaining to the event, this is not a realistic option.[2]

Boycotts are said to have questionable impact beyond impeding our athletes who have dedicated themselves to their noble pursuits.[3]  On-site protests would face the fear of reprisal and jail under the very laws they are protesting,[4] whilst protesting athletes could also face disqualification under the regulations of the IOC.[5]

Nonetheless, we wish to send a message, united as a civilised country that cherishes the right of the individual to self-determination.

Thus, be it resolved that the undersigned petition the Canadian Government to pass an Act designating the 1978 pop song "YMCA" to be the official and only Canadian National Anthem, as recognised under the regulations of the IOC, from the period from February 6, 2014 to February 24, 2014. This designation would be made contingent on the relevant rights owners of the song consenting to its royalty-free use, strictly for this stated performance purpose and period.  In lieu of such an Act, we ask that a referendum be held sufficiently in advance of the 2014 Winter Olympic events so as to permit the Canadian voters to decide the matter.

Each Olympic victory for Canada will also be a victory for the rights of the individual as this anthem plays.  And, with the anthem being the united message of the country's people, it permits our athletes to perform in the name of liberty and with the blessing of our citizens, without demanding that they engage in any activity that may run afoul of Russian law or IOC regulations.
