RE: Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), S. 1926 and H.R. 4239

Dear Members of Congress,

It has come to our attention that the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that would (1) label free speech as terrorism; (2) label animal advocates as terrorists; and (3) prohibit non-violent civil disobedience. This outlandish piece of legislation, entitled, Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), states that if an animal industry can show $10,000 in lost revenues due to protesting, exposing their acts of cruelty or other vague interpretations, the protestor can be fined, jailed and forever labeled a terrorist. We feel that this depraved indifference toward helpless, suffering beings is cruel and intolerable. We cannot and do not want to imagine that American society has a place for such lack of concern for life.

You must be aware now that various national organizations strongly oppose this bill. The Animal Legal Defense Fund, American Jurist, Humane Society of the United States, American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, American Civil Liberties Union, and many others have publicly voiced their disgust for this flagrant abuse of freedom of speech.

We agree with these organizations in that the AETA is overbroad, vague, and unnecessary. The AETA could impact the ability to engage in litigation aimed at protecting abused animals against industries that exploit animals. We are extremely concerned as to Congress motive for criminalizing speech and punishing peaceful protests of animal cruelty. We are outraged that this bill will deter Americans from exercising their First Amendment rights to advocate for reforms in the treatment of animals.

Animal lovers throughout the U.S. are outraged at the possibility that the AETA may be passed. As animal advocates who fight animal cruelty and abuse on a daily basis, we urge you to compassionately address this matter and oppose the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, S. 1926 and H.R. 4239.

Thank you for your swift attention to this matter.
