Civil Society Say: Don't Touch My Constitution

Despite widespread public opposition the President has finally tabled before Parliament the bill to amend he Constitution, with emphasis on Article 6(2) to enable him to stay in power beyond his legal mandate.

This is an unfortunate display of his contempt for the feelings and opinions of the masses, which makes him anything but a democrat.

He is taking this step after increasing the MPs allowances and converting their car loans into non-refundable grants. It is also public knowledge that the President has given each MP a special allowance of 500,000 CFA. These amenities are a right for any parliament that does it job, in a country that can afford it. In the present context it is nothing short of a reprehensible act of institutionalized corruption with intent to compromising the integrity of the legislature and making them to his monarchic designs against the will of the people they represent.

Well, this is the time for Cameroonians to know whether their MPs are real patriots and true representatives of the people, men and women of integrity who cannot be bought, or just a bunch of bellyticians whose loyalties are where their mouth is.

In case anyone was still in doubt, the massive and unprecedented deployment of troops and intimidation of the population that accompany the tabling of this bill are a clear indication that President Biya is aware of how unpopular it is. Any MP voting to pass it can therefore not pretend not to know that it is against the will of the people.

Passing it would be an act of treasonable disloyalty to the nation, which would call for Cameroonians to use all reasonable means to destitute and replace such MPs.
MPs must therefore choose whether to disappoint the President or expose themselves the wrath of the people in whatever form it may come. It must be understood that they WILL NOT get away with such an act of betrayal.

The Cameroon Alliance of Voluntary Organisations for Development (CAVOD), in concert with other networks and independent Civil Society Organisations, would like to declare their rejection of the ongoing attempts to turn our Constitution into a toy.

We count on all friends of Cameroon to stand with all true patriots in this rejection.
