Computer Consumer Protection Act Petition

Over the past year, Ive experienced a number of problems with my computer, which I purchased last March 2003. What spurred me to write this petition was the recent discovery that Apple Computer replaced a defective hard drive with a used hard drive while my iBook was under warranty in November 2003, and then that hard drive failed to work for the same reason just nine months later.

The technician at MAC Computing in Berkeley told me that it was common practice for computer manufacturers to replace new parts with used parts while the computer was under warranty. I want to send a petition to my congressional representative, Barbara Lee (D) California and my senate representatives Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein (D) California, to have them draft and support legislation to end this practice. I call this law the Computer Consumer Protection Act.

Can you imagine if car manufacturers replaced engine and drive train parts in your car with used parts? How about airplanes? Computers are now an integral part of our economy. Practices like the one Im writing about, cause a huge loss of economic revenue and productivity as hard drives store the data that runs our system today.

Not to mention that its just a plain costly and annoying state of affairs to have these practices, and their resultant problems, continue.
