We are a group of organizations and individuals in Hong Kong who support freedom and democracy in Burma. We have received information from the Hong Kong Coalition for a Free Burma that Hutchison Port Holdings operates Myanmar International Terminals Thilawa (MITT), a major terminal in Rangoon. As such, we are writing to express our deep concerns over your commercial involvement in Burma.

Since Hutchison has been operating a business in Burma for a long period of time, you must be aware of the political suppression in the country and the suffering of the people there.@Notwithstanding the military governments announcement that an election will be held this year, the human rights record in Burma has not improved. There are still some 2,100 political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, who have lost their freedom for merely demonstrating peacefully, exercising their freedom of speech and offering help to victims of Cyclone Nargis. Moreover, ethnic nationals continued to be attacked by the military and paramilitary forces supported by the government in 2009, causing around 5,000 people to flee to Thailand, adding to the 150,000 refugees already on the Thai border, and displacing more than 10,000 people inside the country, increasing the ranks of the half a million people who had previously been displaced in Burma. In addition, it is estimated that 90 percent of people in Burma live below the poverty line. Inadequate health care, child soldiers, forced labour and forced relocation and so on also remind us that we should not forget the hardships of the people of Burma.

Responding to the continuing violation of human rights in Burma, we support the call of other campaign groups for Burma to impose economic sanctions as a pressure mechanism to persuade the regime to recognize the crisis in the country and the need for a peaceful resolution of the crisis. Therefore, we are concerned about the role of Hong Kong companies that invest in Burma, including Hutchison. Ordinary people in Burma do not benefit from this investment, but rather, it affords support to the military regime and prolongs the hardships of Burma's people. Furthermore, according to the report in the June 2009 issue of Irrawaddy, an online magazine, MITT facilitated the transport of weapons from North Korea to Burma. As concerned Hong Kong citizens, we do not want to see Hutchison helping to support Burma's military government.

In solidarity with the people of Burma to end the country's military dictatorship, we request Hutchison Port Holdings either to (1) step in and use your influence in Burma to urge the military government to improve the human rights situation and release all political prisoners in the country and end crimes against humanity and war crimes or (2) step out and withdraw its business operations and investment from Burma.
