Defend the London Road

Photo - Lisa Brett & Paul Fox, Walcot Liberal Democrats Please support our London Road petition to: •protect buildings of architectural & historic significance, •stop the eradication of retail outlets, •improve air quality, •stop HGVs using Cleveland Bridge, •protect our natural environment. We, the residents of the London Road, Bath, call upon B&NES Council and its partners to acknowledge the need to improve the London Road as a place where people should want to live, work and relax; to accept the case for strategic investment for the long-term and sustained improvement of the quality of life and living conditions of all the London Road residents, to which the historic and natural environment critically contributes; to agree the importance of the London Road's historic and architectural heritage; to listen to and respond to the real concerns of local communities and residents over the effect of HGVs using Cleveland Bridge as a short cut from the M4 to the south coast; to accept that for far too long there has been no effective strategy in place to protect and preserve the London Road; and, together with its partners, to take the necessary planning, development control and enforcement action, using all legal powers and available resources, to ensure that: 1. Those buildings of architectural or historic interest on the Statutory List are protected, this includes ensuring a protection of use to prevent retail outlets being converted into flats; 2. Areas of special environmental, architectural or historic interest on the London Road are preserved and enhanced in appearance; 3. A list be published of those heritage assets, including buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas and landscapes, which contribute to The London Road’s history, streetscape, character and identity, and which although they may not merit statutory protection, are of significant local, architectural and historic interest to The London Road, and its residents, and should be conserved and enjoyed for future generations; 4. The Conservative council honours its 2007 election pledge to stop HGVs using the Cleveland Bridge; 5. The Council considers a range of other measures to improve the London Road, such as the planting of trees, the use of planters or the re-phasing crossing lights to assist pedestrians.
