Dog Bylaw

Currently, most violations to the Dog Bylaw of the City of Red Deer are set up with penalties that are excessively punitive as compared to other municipalities in Alberta. For example, penalties for a non aggressive dog running at large (out of sight) in an off leash park are $250 for a first offence, $500 for a second offence, and $750 for a third offence. Comparisons with other municipalities in Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton, Blackfalds, and Sylvan Lake) show that penalties for a first offence for a non aggressive dog running at large in an off leash park range from a warning/free ride home program to $50, penalties for a second offence are $100, and penalties for a third offence range from $100 to $200. We, the undersigned, request that the City of Red Deer review the penalties in the Dog Bylaw to align them with the penalties in the Dog Bylaws of Edmonton, Calgary, Sylvan Lake and/or Blackfalds.
