Eliminate The Age 60 Pilot Discrimination Rule

By signing my name below, I am stating my belief that the age 60 rule for commercial pilots is unfair and unwarranted and I am in favor of the passage of both Senate Bill S361 and House Bill H.R.448.
Since it was enacted in 1959, numerous studies including those commissioned by the FAA have shown no evidence that pilots over 60 years old have diminished piloting skills. In fact, there is evidence showing the exact opposite.
Worldwide, many countries have eliminated their age 60 rule. These include Canada, Australia, New Zealand and others with no age restrictions at all. In Europe 31 of the major airlines as well as El AL allow their pilots to fly until 65. Many in Asia, Africa, and South America have also eliminated their age 60 rule. Under current agreements between foreign governments and the United States these foreign airlines are permitted to fly in U.S. airspace with pilots over 60 years of age. Many of the passengers on these foreign airlines are U.S. citizens. I believe U.S. pilots should be afforded the same privilege.
A pilot gains flight experience one-flight hour at a time- there are no short cuts. Many thousands of our most experienced captains will be forced to retire in the next few years simply because they have attained the chronological age of 60. This is age discrimination, pure and simple.
The FAA has recently released their forecast for the airline industry. In the next few years, there will be much higher flying levels than existed prior to September 11, 2001. Couple that with the loss of thousands of our most experienced pilots reaching age 60 and it does not stead well for continuation of the safest airline system in the world.
With the events of 911 still heavy in our hearts and minds it is of paramount importance going forward to have the highest experience level possible in our airline cockpits. Are we willing to place the traveling public at risk over an inappropriate and archaic rule? It simply makes more sense to eliminate the rule!
As a member of the traveling public, I believe the price I pay for an airline ticket should yield the very best and most experienced captains available. We have laws against age discrimination in the United States with commercial pilots as the only exception. This is an exception I should not and will not accept. I am placing my life and well being in your hands, please do the right thing. I want to see Senate Bill S361 and House Bill HR448 become law. The traveling public is watching.
