We would like to urge you to show some empathy and compassion in regards to the suffering of Mr Charif Asaad. We urge you to exercise your power to end his suffering inside Villawood Detention Centre.
Charif Asaad is a Syrian asylum seeker who arrived to Australia 7 years ago. He was put in detention about 2 years ago.
Charif is suffering from epilepsy. His medical situation was deteriorated by his detention, with frequent epilepsy bouts requiring hosiptalisation almost every second month. All visiting physiologists found that his detention affected his mental health and caused deterioration to his already existing medical problems. All of them recommended his immediate release to stop further deterioration and constant self harm.
On many occasions, he went on hunger strike as he is very depressed and at some stage was admitted to mental health institution. As you may know that the medical services in the detention, especially the mental health ones, are very basic, if there is any. He needs more professional attention.
Mr Asaads suffering could be ended by releasing him to community on bridging visa, until his application and claims be finalised by your department
Please end his ordeal by releasing him to community.
