We the undersigned Request the Reconsideration of the University of Florida Commencement Committees Decision to Eliminate Private Ceremonies.
The students of the College of Engineering identify their commencement ceremony as the culmination of their intensive studies and the unity between departments and graduate and undergraduate students. The College of Engineering has coordinated and financed its private Fall and Spring commencement ceremonies since December 2002; and the private ceremony creates a personal touch to students commencement through the acknowledgement of individual departments, special college specific awards and speeches given by engineering faculty, staff and students.
The Commencement Committee appointed by Provost Fouke ruled that the College of Engineering Fall 2006 commencement ceremony will not be private and that graduate and undergraduate students will be separated.
The students of the College of Engineering and of the University of Florida do not believe that the decision of the Commencement Committee to eliminate the College of Engineerings private commencement should be applied to the Fall 2006 commencement ceremonies.
Students request that the decision of separating undergraduate and graduate engineering students commencement ceremonies be reevaluated by the Commencement Committee and be further discussed in a public forum with engineering students.
