RABBITS, CLASSIFIED AS "POULTRY" BY USDA SO THEY CANNOT BE PROTECTED UNDER THE FEDERAL HUMANE SLAUGHTER ACT...
50 Years ago the USDA lobbied against passage of this act; and now the USDA continues to avoid enforcement by reclassifying small animakls as poultry...so they are excluded from this Humane Slaughter Act. USDA INSPECTORS, were so outraged by witnessing "rabbits will cry almost like an infant with loud shrieking" and watching rabbits suffering horribly as workers hung them up by "running a meat hook into the rabbit's leg muscle and sometimes into the bone" all while rabbits were FULLY CONSCIOUS and in terrible awareness and unbelievable pain. Hung upside down rabbits have their heads sawed off while workers "use a dull knife and have to keep using it over and over again to try three or four times to remove the rabbit's head". "A worker had numerous scratches and bite marks from the rabbits' struggle to survive as he was killing them". "The animals are completely aware of what's happening to them and are fighting for their lives." We petition Mike Johanns/Secy of Agriculture to take IMMEDIATE steps to stop this brutality, that your OWN USDA inspectors have horrifyingly called attention to. Please join us to end this sanctioned torture of small animals,and demand that the USDA adopt regulations to include small anuimals such as rabbits as well as chickens under the Humane Slaughter Act.
