Tulane University has a proud athletic tradition, but in recent years we have come to realize something about ourselves. We are not willing to sacrifice our institutional values and expectations to remain one of the "big boys" in college athletics.
The vast majority of us not only accept this fact but applaud it. Tulane may not be able to be a top-10 football or basketball program year in, year out because we simply do not have the resources, athletic budget, facilities, or conference affiliations to do so. We also refuse to lower admissions standards or take on "problem children" in order to further on-the-field performance. This is called "prioritizing."
However, choosing not to be an FSU or LSU does not mean that we choose not to be competitive. Tulane has chosen to have D-I athletics, and as in everything else that our school sets out to do, excellence is expected.
Excellence, for a Tulane team, should mean the following things:
-It should win 50\%+ of its games 3 out of every 5 years, and be competitive in all conference games.
-It should be fundamentally sound.
-Players and coaches should represent the school in a positive manner on and off the court.
-Players should be academically successful.
-Off-the-field incidents should be minimized and dealt with appropriately.
Winning isnt everything, but it is a part of it. If a team can do the above-mentioned things, Tulane fans and the community will support it. Basketball should be a revenue sport, but failure to meet these expectations for excellence has destroyed attendance and consequently hurt program revenue. We, the undersigned, believe that the following failures should result in Shawn Finneys dismissal as head coach.
1. Poor On-court Performance:
Over Shawn Finneys tenure as head basketball coach at Tulane, he has posted a total of 1 winning season (16-15). This year, the teams RPI is #265 out of a possible 331, and are ranked behind schools such as Gardner-Webb, Harvard, and every school in Montana.
These are our wins this year, with the teams RPI rating attached.
