FREE INDEPENDANT TREKKING IN NEPAL

Independant trekking in Nepal is now impossible since the TRC (TrekkingRegistration Certificate) has been implemented. This certificate forcesbackpackers to go trekking with at least one guide or one porter.TRCs are issued in the cities of Kathmandou or Pokhara. As aconsequence,people have to organise their trip through trekking agencies in thoseplacesbefore leaving for trekking. Local people in villages disagree withthis lawas they know they will lose a lot of tourists who were trekking ontheir ownand who will not come anymore. As they say: "money goes in thepockets oftrekking agencies in big cities and we will have nothing"(hotelowner, Jiri,Everest Region).

Independant trekking in Nepal has to be protected for us and for localpopulations.We all have to expless our disagreement with those kind of laws that goagainst our freedom in travelling and to help local populations thathavevery little power against rich decision makers.
