On March 28, 2007, former Major League Baseball relief pitcher with the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers, and Philadelphia Phillies, Ugueth Urtaнn Urbina VIllarreal (known simply as Ugueth Urbina, or "Uggie") was sentenced to fourteen years and seven months in a Venezuelan prison.
His alleged crime? Attempted murder. It is claimed that on October 16, 2005, Urbina attacked five farm workers on his property with a machete and then poured gasoline on them in an effort to set them on fire.
It is the opinion of the undersigned that Uggie's imprisonment represents a brazen miscarriage of justice. Simply put, he is an innocent man who was railroaded on a set of trumped-up charges. There was never any attempt to murder those farm workers--it was all just an unfortunate misunderstanding. Uggie was engaging the workers in a fun game of machete-and-gascan-tag; a game the workers were unfamiliar with.
We, the undersigned thus have two demands:
1. Free Ugueth Urbina immediately an expunge his criminal record.
2. That the Venezuelan government provide Ugueth Urbina with restitution payments matching the Major League average salary for middle relief pitchers.
As a great man once said, "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." For the good of all humanity, this injustice cannot and will not be allowed to stand.
