We believe an injustice has happened in Carlow Senior football. Fighting Cocks GFC, the newly crowned Carlow Intermediate Football Champions for 2012, have been denied promotion to the Senior Carlow Championship for 2013. A
fter 73 long
years in waiting, the Fighting Cocks have been told they are not going to be promoted due to restructuring of the Carlow championship
Here's how the situation unfolded: three days after the Fighting Cocks finished playing football in the Leinster Championship, the county board held an information evening outlining new plans to overhaul the championship structures for Senior, Intermediate and Junior A. Their plan is to create three championships from two. This move would mean that the Fighting Cocks would be unable to
take their rightful place at the senior table next year. The Cocks say the reason for this is that a few previous intermediate winners have not been able to compete at senior level. Naturally, the Fighting Cocks find this incredibly annoying.
The Fighting Cocks have not been in the Carlow Senior Championship and they will not be there to make up the numbers.
There is a vote to decide the Fighting Cocks' fate on this Wednesday night Nov 21 and they are would calling on all clubs in Carlow and the wider GAA world to row in behind us and vote against this motion which flies in the face of what the GAA is supposed to be about. Their panel of 30 players trained 125 times in 2012 outside of matches with the goal of playing Senior Football next year. They won the right fairly and squarely.
Contact Niall Byrne, Secretary of the Fighting Cocks GFC, to discuss the issue further on 087-9101627 or 086-3191663.
In the mean time make your voice heard and let the Carlow GAA know that the Fighting Cocks deserve their place in the Carlow Senior Championship.
