Health Care for Grad Students at UVa

It is in the best interest of the University of Virginia to provide quality affordable health care for the graduate students it employs as teachers and researchers.
The University has fallen short of its commitment to provide health insurance to graduate student workers due to loopholes in eligibility for the graduate health insurance subsidy.
The proposed health care plan changes and student health summer fee represent backsliding on this commitment, and will be a significant hardship for many already-underpaid graduate student employees.
Therefore, we urge the University to
Increase the graduate health insurance subsidy to cover any deductibles resulting from plan changes.
Extend the subsidy to include graduate student employees classified as adjunct faculty (i.e. instructors).
Modify the subsidy eligibility requirements to include graduate students who earn a total of at least $5000 from employment and/or fellowships.
Waive the student health summer fee for graduate student employees.
