Homelessness in the Downtown Eastside is a social issue that the City of Vancouver has been battling for decades. However, the topic of homelessness has struck many Lower Mainland residents since the arrival of the Syrian refugees. Many news outlets have reported how after decades of watching homelessness from the sidelines, Right-Wing Conservatives are now suddenly concerned about the welfare of homeless residents of the DTES in response to the Federal Government allowing entry of Syrian/Palestinian refugees. In summary, this project will enable the alleviation of homelessness by proposing a sustainable temporary housing program that offers dignity and stability to current homeless folks in Vancouver by providing them with a permanent address and a quaint home with all basic living necessities. Each tiny home has an affordable price tag, totalling a mere $850 per unit. Each unit will be equipped with a bed, heater, closet, window and sink. Provisions for bathrooms will be offered in a communal bathroom facility. Facilities will be cleaned by staff regularly. In order for homeless folks to be considered for this form of temporary social housing, they will be required to commit themselves to a 6-month employment training program, where they will be provided the skills and resources needed in order to obtain jobs. Additionally, they will be committing themselves to mental health therapy programs and/or workshops to combat substance abuse run by local NGO's. The Tiny Home project can be used to inspire homeless folks of the DTES to move up the ladder of social mobility in a dignified manner. The goal of the Tiny Home project is to offer folks a second chance. By signing this petition, you will be directly letting the City of Vancouver know that you support the Tiny Home project and it's initiative to start a pilot project in Pigeon Park, Vancouver. Each tiny home will be sponsored by large corporations, NGO's and the general public.
