Every year in Seattle, a tragically large number of homeless people die while living on the streets. Some die due to illness; some due to exposure; some because of alcoholism or drug abuse; and some because of the cruelty of others, who target homeless people because of their vulnerability.
We urge leaders of the City of Seattle to allow a permanent Memorial Garden to be dedicated within Freeway Park so that the lives of homeless people who died while living on the streets can be remembered. We believe the City of Seattle should value these lives by allowing a memorial that is dignified, permanent, consistent with the aesthetic of the park, and visible for passersby. We believe it is not necessary to dedicate public funds for this purpose, but that private individuals and groups can cooperate with the City to create a suitable memorial.

I applaud this Homeless Memorial Garden for the homeless who die in our urban midst - usually alone, forgotten, and isolated. It would be good if the deaths could be publicized so that people could attend to respect the deceased. I only learn of some home
