1. Closure of the Library on Saturdays
2. Reduction in the working hours of the library on weekdays
3. Laying off staff to achieve cost efficiencies
The Five Corners Library in Jersey City has been in existence since 1924. The library conducts a wide range of programs that benefit the community. These include career development sessions, Yoga classes and counseling in addition to the core goal of providing easy access to the wealth of knowledge for free.
As residents and ardent users of these services, we believe that now is perhaps the worst time to enact these short sighted cuts. In a time of distress and pressure, organizations like the Five Corners library provide the local community a hubspot to gather and network towards the goal of social betterment.
As residents we appeal to the City Authorities to leverage this institution more and make it more accessible to community. We also understand that there are staff reductions being considered as a part of some of the new changes. In todays age of technology and virtual meetings, libraries are transforming into a meeting point of technology and people. We urge the city to reconsider these decisions.
Once again we reiterate the following demands:
1. Library should be open on Saturdays
2. No reduction in working hours
3. No staff layoffs
Please help us in achieving these goals.
