Dear Pink Floyd Fans and Curious Readers,





Johnny Depp should play Syd Barrett. This petition is to counter the online petition that reads, Johnny Depp Is Not Syd Barrett. In this petition, I propose that Johnny Depp should play Syd Barrett on the grounds that Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands ever and this could be one of the greatest stories ever told (as long as the movie is well done). Johnny Depp is a credible actor and I believe that he could play Syd Barrett as Syd Barrett and not as Johnny Depp. I think that Mr. Depp would take care to capture the beautiful and poetic side of Syd and portray him in a positive light as well as present the more sympathetic side of this beloved character.





The online petition that says, Johnny Depp Is Not Syd Barrett has been supported for two reasons which I disagree with and will argue against. The first reason the concern that the Pink Floyd movie will glamorize the use of LSD. I will have to say that I disagree. Syd Barrett is the poster child for dont use drugs kids. If anyone wants to be discouraged from using too many drugs, all they need to do is see a documentary on Syd Barrett. Furthermore, there is such a thing as ratings and parents can refuse to take their children to the movie if they find it inappropriate for children. If Pink Floyd should not be allowed than why do we allow movies like Hostile? Hopefully, you get my point.





The second reason some people have signed the Johnny Depp Should Not Play Syd Barrett petition is out of respect for Syds privacy. I know that in his later days Syd did not wish to hear of Pink Floyd and was busy with his painting and gardening. It has been suggested that Syd had Aspergers syndrome. I do not know if Syd had Aspergers, and I am not saying that Syd had it. However, if Syd did have Aspergers, that means Syd is a person like me because I have Aspergers too. Either way I can understand the link between genius and madness and what it is like to be the idiot/savant. I can understand Syds need for privacy, because there are also things in my life that I cant talk about either due to inner trauma. I can understand if Pink Floyd was a sleeping dog that Syd wanted to keep buried. I can understand if Syd did not want to leave the house if he was worried that everyone was looking at him like he was some kind of a freak and asking about Pink Floyd. I can understand why Syd did not want to be bothered.





The problem is, however, that maybe Syd did not know how much people loved him and his fans accepted him for who he was. Syd has had such a huge influence on so many peoples lives. Syd is a legend, a creative genius, and he contributed so much to music in such a short time. I think his music and legend should be remembered always, because otherwise his legacy may die which would be a greater disservice to Syd in the end. He was a painter, a poet, and artist, and a dreamer. As a person with Aspergers, I want people to be more understanding about what I have if in fact that is what Syd had (but I am not saying it is). People can learn to both appreciate Syds bright shining sunny side and his dark side of the moon while realizing there is a little bit of Syd in all of us.





Please sign this petition if you think that Johnny Depp should play Roger (Syd) Barrett. Please Mr. Depp, I will be so excited to see a movie about my favorite band! I also love Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Rick Wright, Nick Mason, and all the others and want to see them portrayed on screen.
