Justice for Victims of the COINTELPRO
We the undersigned urge Representative John Conyers Jr., leader of the House Committee on the Judiciary to conduct a congressional investigation of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) illegal Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO). Since Representative John Conyers Jr. is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), we also urge the CBC to support the aforementioned congressional investigation. The aim of the congressional investigation would be to uncover how the illegal actions of the COINTELPRO were responsible for the imprisonment of numerous men and women in the United States of America (USA).
The COINTELPRO was an active FBI operation from 1956-1971, whose sole purpose was to destroy individuals and groups perceived as threats to the status quo in the USA. Such groups included the Black Panther Party, the American Indian Movement, Students for a Democratic Society and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee all of which fought against the social injustices of their time. Victims of the COINTELPRO, people such as Marshall Eddie Conway in Maryland and Leonard Peltier in Kansas, are still in prison; many others like them are serving life sentences for crimes they did not commit.
Therefore, we the undersigned demand:
An open and full investigation of the COINTELPRO and its impact on civil and human rights
Granting the victims of the COINTELPRO their freedom or at least finally granting them a fair trial.
