Let males that have sex with other males give blood

The current policy is to ask those in groups shown to have a particularly high risk of carrying blood-borne viruses not to give blood. This includes men who have ever had sex with men, with this exclusion resting on specific sexual behaviour (such as oral or anal sex between men) rather than sexuality. There is, therefore, no exclusion of gay men who have never had sex with a man, nor of women who have sex with women.

This policy is essentially stereotyping ALL men that have ever had sex with another man as carriers of HIV/AIDS. I understand the NHS' motive for taking this precaution but as Every single blood donation is tested for HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and hepatitis B and C (also taken from http://www.blood.co.uk/can-i-give-blood/), is it even necessary to discriminate against the aforementioned category of potential donators, and prevent them from donating? I find it hard to believe that the NHS wishes to enforce a policy fostering out-of-date and derogatory stereotypes. In this day and age, outdated precautions preventing certain members of society cannot be justified, especially when everyone else can now be just as likely to carry the disease.
