- We take pride in our beautiful park system. This is a place where we go to exercise, enjoy nature, spend time with family and friends, or attend a local community event. To allow tobacco use in such a unique park system is not consistent with our community values.
- The mission of the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board states: "The...Board exists to provide places and recreation opportunities for all people to gather, celebrate, contemplate, and engage in activities that promote health, well-being, community, and the environment." Clearly, tobacco use is not consistent with providing recreation activities or promoting health, well-being, community or the environment for its residents.
- Tobacco use also does not fit into the "Vision to 2020" and the themes that drive our renowned and award-winning park system. Our parks system is a destination for people around the Metro area to enjoy, and we are entrusted with a unique experience that "cultivates outstanding experiences, health, enjoyment, fun, and learning for all people." Tobacco use is not consistent with these values.
Finally, the goals of the Park Board state that "residents are proud stewards and supporters of an extraordinary park and recreation system." We are proud stewards of our parks and the environment that they protect. This is why we urge you to adopt a tobacco-free park policy for our parks.
