The 1992 Disney musical, Newsies, (about the little heard of Newsboy Strike of 1899) is agreed by many to be one of Disney's best. It is also one of the most under-publicized, which is why it didnt score big in the box office. Despite its lack of publicity, Newsies remains a favorite among many; type in Newsies at any search engine and youll end up with thousands of sites devoted to the movie and individual actors. There are dozens of Yahoo groups based on the musical, and many devoted fans even write Newsie fan fiction. (On FanFiction.net alone there are over 1700 stories!)
The Newsie Mailing List (NML) on Yahoo groups has almost 700 members, and while other groups may not have that impressive number of membership, they do have a good amount of people. All over the internet there are Lodging Houses created by these said fans, and almost every fan has created a Newsie name for his or herself to be closer to the characters in the movie. In the big picture, the number of fans may not be many, but we are devoted.
Thanks to Newsie fans, Disney released the Newsies DVD (complete with behind the scenes extras and audio commentary.) The next project is getting our beloved boys on the Broadway stage. The Yahoo group Reverie1186 is devoted to just that cause, as well as a new DVD with deleted scenes and dance numbers. A member of the aforementioned group mentioned that she had heard that Kenny Ortega had been trying to achieve this.
This petition is to show Disney and Broadway exactly how many people want Newsies up on stage. Please sign it.
