Ordinance Mandating Hiring of Springfield Volunteer Firefighters

As residents of Springfield, friends, and supporters of Springfield Volunteer Firefighters we ask the township of Springfield to establish an ordinance to make all future appointments to its career department from the ranks of its dedicated volunteer department. The Springfield Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1906 and it would lay the cornerstone for the eventual establishment of the career department in 1929. The volunteer department's dedicated members receive firefighter and EMS training, volunteer their time, support the community and therefore should be given the first opportunities for paid firefighter positions within the Springfield Fire Department. In addition, an ordinance of this sort would be fiscally beneficial to taxpayers as the township would not be expending money to train firefighters. As many police departments hire by using alternate route, which trains officers before they enter their law enforcement careers, firefighters who have trained in the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department should be given priority when appointments are made to the career department. These volunteers also have work experience within the Springfield Fire Department and its operations, thus it is only logical to offer them available paid positions.
We support the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department and encourage the township to support them as well by establishing an ordinance mandating appointments to its paid department from the volunteer department.
